Only two games remaining on the Memphis Tigers 2024 slate. Their hopes of playing in the AAC title game have faded, but the season’s final games have significant meaning. On Saturday, the “Battle for the Bones” rivalry picks up where it left off from last season, where Memphis defeated UAB 45-23.
Afterward, the Tigers will head into another bye before they face AAC heavyweight, the Tulane Green Wave, on Thanksgiving night. But before the Tigers can think of ending their three-game losing streak against Tulane, they must get past UAB. Saturday’s matchup is also the final home game of many key players, such as Seth Henigan, Roc Taylor, Brandon Thomas, Chandler Martin, and Koby Drake. Here’s our UAB vs. Memphis game preview, scouting report, and score prediction.

UAB Scouting Report
Head Coach: Trent Dilfer
QB: Jalen Kitna
Record: 2-7 (1-4 AAC)
The Blazers are on the verge of not qualifying for bowl eligibility for the second straight year under head coach Trent Dilfer. The blowout defeats that have taken place this season are similar to how Dilfer’s first year with the program took hold. There are just not a lot of traits that show Dilfer is a head coach who can build a contender at the collegiate level. Two head coaches have already been fired during the season in the AAC; could Dilfer suffer the same fate? It’s possible, but with a record of 2-7 and three games remaining on the schedule, there’s not much an interim head coach can do.
Regarding the current product on the field, UAB has struggled mightily. There only bright spot of the 2024 campaign was a 59-21 victory over Tulsa. Before the matchup with UAB, Tulsa rallied from being down 28 to defeat UTSA 46-45. On offense, the Blazers are ranked 65th in total yards, 89th in points, and 108th in rushing. Defensively, the unit is ranked 128th in points allowed, 99th in total offense, and 130th against the run. Quarterback Jalen Kitna leads the program in passing with 1,502 yards and 11 touchdown passes. On the ground, Lee Beebe leads all UAB rushers with 600 yards and four touchdowns.
Key Matchups to Watch in the Battle for the Bones
1. Mario Anderson vs. UAB’s Run Defense
Mario Anderson has been a dominant force for Memphis this season, and Saturday’s game provides a prime opportunity for him to shine. UAB’s run defense ranks 130th nationally, allowing a staggering 245.3 rushing yards per game. On the brink of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season, Anderson will likely be the focal point of Memphis’ offense. If the Tigers’ offensive line can open up running lanes, Anderson could have a monster game, helping Memphis control the tempo and secure a convincing win.
2. Seth Henigan vs. UAB Secondary
In his final home game, Seth Henigan can showcase his leadership and precision against a vulnerable UAB secondary. Henigan has already cemented his place in Memphis history as the all-time leading passer, and he’ll look to add to his impressive stats against a defense ranked 99th in total yards allowed. With reliable targets like Roc Taylor and Koby Drake, Henigan could exploit UAB’s coverage weaknesses and deliver a memorable performance for the home crowd.
3. Memphis Front Seven vs. Jalen Kitna
UAB quarterback Jalen Kitna has been one of the few bright spots for the Blazers, throwing 1,502 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, Memphis’ defensive front, led by Chandler Martin, has the ability to disrupt Kitna’s rhythm. The Tigers’ pass rush must apply consistent pressure to force hurried throws and capitalize on UAB’s mistakes. Limiting Kitna’s time in the pocket will be crucial in containing the Blazers’ passing game and avoiding any offensive momentum from UAB.
4. Memphis Receivers vs. UAB Secondary
This matchup is personal, with Roc Taylor and Koby Drake playing their final home games. Both receivers have been reliable playmakers and will look to exploit a UAB secondary that has struggled to contain explosive plays. Look for Memphis to utilize its passing game to stretch the field, create mismatches, and give its seniors a fitting sendoff with big contributions in the rivalry game.
5. Memphis Defensive Line vs. UAB’s Rushing Attack
UAB’s rushing game, led by Lee Beebe, has struggled this season, ranking 108th nationally. However, Beebe has shown flashes of explosiveness, and the Memphis defensive line must ensure he doesn’t find his groove. The Tigers’ run defense, ranked 33rd nationally, will need to hold strong and force UAB to rely on their inconsistent passing game.
Score Prediction: Expect the Tigers to have a huge night in this year’s “Battle for the Bones” matchup, especially the seniors. The UAB rush defense is allowing 245.3 yards per game. Mario Anderson, the Tigers’ running back, should be well above 1,000 yards by this game’s end.
Memphis 49, UAB 21
